CVD Risk Factors

Card Catalog

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Risk Factors are divided into two categories:

Fixed CVD Risk Factors
Unfortunately, we are stuck with the CVD Risk in this category since these factors are non-negotiable:
Heredity
Age
Gender

Modifiable CVD Risk Factors
However, there is a 2nd category of CVD Risk that can be controlled to effectively lower the risk of heart disease for example:
Smoking
Cholesterol & Triglycerides
Stress & Depression
Sedentary Lifestyle
Blood Pressure (BP)
Diabetes
Overweight

SMOKING:
Specifically, tobacco products, but smoking anything is health harmful.
Causes inflammation & constriction of arteries.
Increases Blood Pressure.
Decreases oxygen in the blood.
  Treatment   QUIT
CHOLESTEROL & TRIGLYCERIDES:
We actually need these lipids to live a healthy life.
The problem is that too much of a good thing can cause problems, like cardiac arterial plaque and CVD.
  Treatment

EXERCISE, DIET & MEDICATION (Statin)

STRESS & DEPRESSION:
Thoughts & Emotions can affect the body and play an important role in the development of CVD.
Treatment EXERCISE, YOGA, FIND A HOBBY (play guitar, learn a language, etc.)
SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE:
  Sedentary is difficult to define.

But exercising aerobically for 30 minutes 3 times a week is considered minimum for heart health.

Treatment WALK, SWIM, BIKE, CANOE OR DANCE.
BLOOD PRESSURE (BP)
BP is the force pushing blood through your arties.

Optimal Range: Less than 130/80 mm Hg

Here again, we need BP to live, but too much can cause injury to our arteries, setting the stage for CVD.

Treatment EXERCISE, WEIGHT REDUCTION, DIET MODIFICATION, & MEDICATION.
DIABETES:
Insulin production is compromised and glucose transport into cells is restricted.
Treatment  DIET MODIFICATION & INSULIN MEDICATION.
  Prevention

LOWER DIETARY SUGARS & CARBOHYDRATES.

OVER WEIGHT:
Overweight is defined as a BMI over 30 and/or a large Waist Line.
Waist Line Measurement Limit:
  Male :    40 in or 100 cm
Female: 38 in or   96 cm
  Treatment LIFESTYLE CHANGES.
Prevention EXERCISE, DIET, SUGAR RESTRICTION, SALT RESTRICTION, FRUITS AND VEGGIES.

Please notice how EXERCISE is either a treatment or prevention for CVD in most of the above factors!  After all, we are biological beings designed to be PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.
